Edan Shorten – our gymnastics Sporty Sista
Our #SportySista for June is Edan Shorten. We were lucky enough to interview this passionate athlete, who shared her love for gymnastics with us.
“Each time I learn a new skill it feels like I’ve climbed a new mountain. It’s a place where I can push myself physically, emotionally and mentally with the encouragement of amazing friends.
I was 4 when I started gymnastics, and remember just loving it. I had great coaches that always made it an adventure. I loved jumping on things and swinging off anything I could find, so gymnastics seemed like the perfect sport for me. I am now 15 years old and still love it!
When I started, I was very small. So when I did warm-ups with everyone I would often get knocked over. I also have food allergies, and a major barrier for me is allergic reactions experienced from touching food residue left on the gymnastics equipment. But I don’t let this stop me!”
Edan’s top tips for girls thinking about giving gymnastics a go
- Have fun even if it’s hard.
- If you don’t get a skill right on the first go keep trying, you’ll get it eventually.
- Be open to making new friends.
- Listen to your coaches – they know what they’re talking about!
Edan’s career highlights and her plans for the future
“There have been plenty of highlights throughout my gymnastics career. Some of these include winning National Clubs for the first time back in 2014 (as a team), being selected into the NSW State Team, and competing at National Clubs Championships. This was my first level 10 competition, where I placed third on bars, fourth on floor and fourth overall.
I would love to represent Australia in New Zealand this year. To achieve this, I will need to place in the top eight at the Australian Gymnastics Championships (Nationals). I would also love to compete at the Commonwealth Games one day.”
You’re truly inspirational, Edan. Stay tuned for more #SportySista stories!
It’s never too late to start, there are plenty of beginners classes available for all age groups.
